Jiu-Jitsu for beginners. What to expect on your first day?
What to Expect in Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class
If you have been thinking about starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), walking into your first class can feel exciting and a little intimidating. The good news is, everyone in the gym was a beginner once, and most people will remember exactly how you feel. At IJJ ATX, we make sure your first experience is safe, welcoming, and fun. Here is what you can expect.
1. A Warm Welcome
When you arrive, a coach or teammate will greet you, show you around, and explain where to store your belongings. You will get a quick tour of the mat area, changing rooms, and where to find water or other essentials.
Tip: Arrive about 10 minutes early so you have time to settle in and meet your instructor.
2. The Gear You Will Need
For your first class, you do not need to go out and buy expensive gear. We’ll will have loaner uniforms (called a gi) or recommend you wear comfortable athletic clothes if it is a no-gi class. If you are doing gi training, you will also get a belt that matches your rank (white belt if you are just starting).
Pro tip: Bring flip-flops or sandals. You will wear them off the mat and go barefoot on the mat to keep things clean.
3. Warm-Up
Classes usually start with a warm-up that includes movements used in BJJ, like shrimping, bridging, and rolls. Do not worry if you have never done these before, your instructor will demonstrate each one and give you time to practice. The goal is to get your body moving and ready for training.
4. Learning Techniques
After warming up, you will learn one or two techniques. This could be anything from a basic guard pass to an escape from side control. The instructor will break down the steps, then you will partner up to practice. Expect to drill each movement several times, focusing on proper form and control.
5. Light Rolling (Sparring)
In some beginner classes, you might finish with rolling, which is BJJ’s form of sparring. If you are brand new, you may just watch or do light positional training instead. Rolling is where you apply the techniques you have learned in a live, controlled situation. Do not worry, your partner will go at a pace that matches your skill level.
6. Respect and Etiquette
BJJ has a strong culture of respect. You will bow or shake hands before training with a partner, listen closely when the instructor is speaking, and keep the mats clean. These traditions help create a safe and friendly training environment.
7. You Will Be Tired… But You Will Want to Come Back!
Your first BJJ class might be physically challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. You will leave having learned something new, met new people, and taken the first step on your BJJ journey. Many people find that once they try it, they cannot wait for the next class.
