It all started here
1995 - Santos, Brazil
A brief history of our team:
Welcome to Integração Jiu-Jitsu Austin — the first official IJJ academy outside Brazil.
We’re honored to bring the legacy of one of Brazil’s most respected Jiu-Jitsu teams to the heart of Texas. Founded in 1995 by Master Elcio Figueiredo in Santos-SP, Brazil, Integração Jiu-Jitsu has shaped champions, built a tight-knit community, and stayed true to the roots of the art.
Master Elcio began his martial arts journey as a accomplished competitor in Judo. He later transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Rolls Gracie, training with him until brown belt. After Rolls’ untimely passing, Elcio continued under the guidance of Carlson Gracie, where he earned his black belt and became part of one of the most influential lineages in the sport.
Later, in Santos city, Elcio was invited to launch a Jiu-Jitsu program at the traditional Japanese club Golden Star (Estrela de Ouro), starting IJJ in 1995. Under his leadership, Integração grew into a powerhouse in Brazil, winning four consecutive State Championships and becoming one of the most prestigious teams in the country.
Over the years, Integração has produced world champions and legends of the sport, including Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida (the most decorated world champion in Jiu-Jitsu history), Rodrigo Cavaca, and Leonardo Nogueira, just to name a few—all of whom began their journey with us.
Now, that tradition lives on in Austin. Whether you're training for competition, fitness, or personal growth, you’re welcome here. Join us and become part of a legacy built on excellence, respect, and community!
Our Head Instructor: Gabriel Martins
Gabriel was fortunate to start training BJJ under the guidance of Master Elcio at the IJJ HQ in Santos, at the age of 14. Originally looking to just learn self-defense and stay active, he quickly discovered a passion for the sport and started competing very soon. Still as a blue belt he became a world champion, and knew early on that Jiu-Jitsu would be his career. After visiting the U.S for different tournaments, Gabriel saw the chance to bring IJJ to the American soil.
In 2016, he founded IJJ Austin—and has been growing the community ever since.
